UPSC syllabus is the nerve of IAS preparation. Every question in the IAS exam flows through the UPSC syllabus. Understanding the UPSC syllabus is the first step towards success in the UPSC exam. Here is the list of UPSC Syllabus for Prelims and Mains.

UPSC Syllabus(2021) for Civil Services Prelims Exam

The preliminary exam comprises two compulsory papers. Each paper consists of 200 marks and it is of two hours duration. Both these papers are objective type and it consists of two sets English and Hindi. These papers are also considered general studies-1 and general studies-2. Although general studies paper -2 is only a qualifying paper. The aspirants should obtain 33% of marks in this paper. General studies -2 is also known as CSAT ( Civil Service Aptitude Test).

UPSC Syllabus for Prelims General Studies Paper-1

It has 100 questions broadly covering the following topics carrying a maximum of 200 marks to be solved in 2 hours.

  1. Current events of National & International importance.
  2. History of India & Indian National Movement.
  3. Indian & World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India & the World.
  4. Indian Policy & Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  5. Economic & Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
  6. General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity & climate change – that do not require subject specialization.
  7. General Science.

UPSC Syllabus for Prelims – General Studies Paper-2

  1. Problem-solving and decision-making
  2. General mental ability
  3. Comprehension
  4. Analytical and logical reasoning
  5. Data Interpretation.
  6. Interpersonal skills including communication skills.

The duration is of two hours and marks out of 200. Presently, this paper will not consider passing prelims. However, the candidate has to secure a minimum of 33% of 200 marks, which comes to 66 marks.

UPSC Syllabus (2021) for Civil Services Mains Exam

The marks that are scored for the UPSC mains examination and interview sessions will decide the candidate’s ranking. The UPSC mains consist of 1750 marks. Moreover, the interview consists of 275 marks. UPSC mains consists of nine papers out of which seven are count for final ranking. The rest two are language papers in which aspirants should secure minimum marks prescribed by UPSC every year.

UPSC Main Examination consists of a written examination and interview which is a personality test.

What are the subjects in UPSC?

There are 25 optional subjects in the UPSC IAS main exam and the candidates need to choose only one out of them. The optional subject carries 500 out of 1750 marks. It is around 30% of the total score. So the candidates are suggested to select the optional subject very carefully because it can make or break their dream of becoming an IAS officer.

Current Affairs are an integral part of your UPSC preparation. It is included in the syllabus of Prelims under the title, “Issues of national and international importance”.
