What is the civil service examination?
The civil service examination is a widely chosen national-level competitive examination conducted under the supervision of the regulatory body of the Union Public Service Commission. The Civil Service Examination is a competitive examination conducted once every year. It is a paper-based test that requires writing skills, knowledge of English and other relevant subjects like General knowledge, etc, and personality for qualifying interviews.
A qualified candidate approximately sits for 32 hours of examination to complete the process in a whole span of a year.
Facts and numbers for civil service examination 2021
There are approximately 10,93,984 candidates who applied for the civil services examinations, out of which approximately 5, 08,619 ( 50%) successfully actually appeared for the same. out of which 5, 08,619 candidates actually appeared in the examination. Out of the total application, a total of 9214 qualified for the Main Examination (Stage 2). It led to a positive result of 1% for the examination held in January 2021. The total conversion ratio of the candidates who qualified for stage 3 of the personality test for civil service examinations is around 0.1% for the total application made. An aggregate of 1824 students qualified for all the stages of civil services examinations in 2021.

The Civil services examinations are conducted in 3 stages and students need to qualify each of these to become successful IAS officers.
Stage 1 – Preliminary Examinations

STAGE 1- PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION OF CIVIL SERVICES
The preliminary examinations is conducted with two MCQ-type papers of general studies I and general studies II. The preliminary examinations of civil service examinations is popularly known as the Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT). The duration of the prelims examination for civil services is 2 hours. The aggregate mark for prelims examinations is 200.
STAGE 2- CIVIL SERVICES MAINS EXAMINATIONS
The Civil Services Mains Examinations consist of Nine subjective papers out of which 2 are qualifying and only marks are calculated for the other seven papers. 3 hours is the duration for IAS mains examinations. The writing skills and subjective knowledge for relevant subjects to qualify for civil service examinations. 1750 is the aggregate mark for the main examination.
STAGE 3- INTERVIEW EXAMINATIONS
Personal Interviews are an integral part of civil service examinations. The students are required to perform well and qualify for the interview to clear the whole examinations. The variable duration of interview preparation is 1 hour. The total aggregate marks for interview examinations is 275.
Registration for Civil Services Examinations
The registration fee for Civil Services Examinations is Rs. 100 for male general candidates and the registration for other candidates is exempted.
The general candidates have a limit of 6 times to appear for the civil service examination. The OBC and PwDB candidates can appear for 9 times. There is no limit for SC and ST candidates for no. of time appearing for civil service examinations.
